Already in the year 1281 Melschede is first documented as a bailly of the county of Arnsberg.
Since 1364 until today Melschede is owned by the Barons von Wrede-Melschede.
Between 1659 and 1669 Ferdinand Baron von Wrede-Melschede, Marshall of Westphalia,
had the actual castle built by the famous architects Bonitius of Trier and Spantzl of Meran.
In 1820 the north wing with its flanking towers was taken down. By this the castle got its open generous three wing shape as we know from today.
At the same time the valley was formed into an about 200 ha park scenery in English style. This is mostly existing still today.

In 1920 some further changes and restorations took place thus bringing the castle into today's shape.
Still private property the west wing is used for exclusive events since about 5 years.
Since 2004 civil and religious marriages can take place. The latter one in one of the most beautiful baroque chapels of Westphalia.
